4 Ways to Use Coconut Oil for Optimal Hair Health

Coconut oilhas been all the craze for years and for good reason. Highlighted in both the health and beauty industry, this rich source of medium-chain fatty acids can do wonders for your hair. If youre looking to naturally nourish your hair and scalp, heres how to add it to your routine.

Why Use Coconut Oil for Hair Health?

Offering beneficial acids, coconut is specifically high in lauric acid which is known to be a beneficial antimicrobial agent. Based on lauric acids ability to support cellular and hormonal health, it is also often recommended in regards to hair health.

In fact, one study stated that of the three oils tested (coconut, sunflower, and mineral), coconut was the only oil to reduce protein loss for both damaged and undamaged hair when used as both a pre-wash and post-wash hair product.

Please note that this oil is not ideal for all hair types. Typically, best for those who have fine to medium hair, it can help you achieve shinier, stronger hair. Although it can benefit some people with coarser, drier hair, argan oil is generally better for this hair type.

4 Ways You Can Start Using Coconut Oil Benefit Your Hair

Using coconut oil within your grooming regimen is a simple and inexpensive way to improve your hair health. In order to start maximizing the beneficial properties associated with this beloved oil, heres what you should do.

Option #1: Apply and allow your hair to condition

Warm 2-3 tablespoons of it (depending on your hair type and length), before evenly distributing it. Comb the oil through your hair with your fingers, working it in at the roots and then wear a shower cap for a minimum of 30 minutes or wear it overnight. Wash with shampoo and warm water.

Option #2: Combat dandruff naturally

In a similar fashion, melt 1-2 tablespoons of coconut oil before massaging it into your scalp. Wrap your head in an old towel and if possible, leave in overnight. Before you wash your hair the following morning, consider an Epsom salt scrub to exfoliate dead skin cells.

Option #3: Use as a base for all-natural hair coloring

If you use natural hair colorants, coconut oil has the ability to penetrate hair deeper and faster. Melt 1-2 tablespoons before mixing it with your colorant and apply as you normally would. Wash and rinse as normal.

Option #4: Use for hair growth

In a similar fashion to deep conditioning, all you need to do is work melted coconut oil into your hair. The vitamins and essential fatty acids present will promote a healthier scalp and in turn, can initiate more efficient hair growth.
