Causes of Hair Loss in Women

According to Harvard Medical School, about one-third of women experience hair loss at some point in their lives. It can severely affect a woman’s confidence as well as heremotional well-being. Here are a few reasons why women experience hair loss:

Hormonal Imbalance

Hormonal imbalance is one of the most common causes of hair loss in women. Naturally, women tend to produce a small amount of testosterone. Around the time of menopause, estrogen levels fall, and testosterone levels rise. These testosterone hormones are then converted into a stronger hormone known as DHT. When this process occurs, hair follicles start to become inactive and begin to fall. Women may also experience it when they are pregnant, going through puberty, or going on contraceptives due to hormonal imbalance.

Anemia

Women are usually the ones at risk of iron deficiency anemia because of blood loss from their periods and higher blood supply demands during pregnancy. Anemia is a condition whereby there is an insufficient amount of healthy red blood cells in the human body to carry enough oxygen to the body’s tissues. Therefore, when your body is unable to supply your entire system with oxygen, its first instinct is to channel whatever available supply to your vital organs instead of your hair follicles. Without oxygen, your hair follicles are not able to function as they usually would and end up falling out.

Stress

Some women experience it when going through a difficult time in their lives. Stress pushes hair strands into the resting phase and causes them to stop producing new, fresh ones. As time passes by, even simple tasks such as combing and washing your hair can cause these hair follicles to fall out more easily.

Family History

Female-pattern hair loss (FPHL) is a condition where the hair starts to thin along the top of the head. This condition often gets worse during menopause and is commonly hereditary. Around 40% of women by age 50 experience hair loss due to FPHL.

In a nutshell, with proper nutrition and vitamin supplements, women of all ages are able to combat hair loss and regain their confidence. If you’re looking for a customized hair loss solution contact Christoffels Hair Restoration!
